Here, they are combined with okra and the other classic gumbo ingredients for a hearty dish with a southern flair.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t1 onion, chopped<br \/>\n\t2 cloves garlic, chopped<br \/>\n\t1 green pepper, chopped<br \/>\n\t1 28-ounce can plum tomatoes, cut up<br \/>\n\t1 dried red pepper, crumbled<br \/>\n\t1 pound okra, sliced<br \/>\n\t1\/4 cup parsley, chopped<br \/>\n\t1\/4 cup basil, chopped<br \/>\n\t1 bay leaf<br \/>\n\t2 cans chick peas<br \/>\n\t1 tablespoon lemon juice<br \/>\n\tCooked brown rice or other whole grains of your choice (optional)<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBring the onion, garlic, pepper, tomatoes and their liquid, and the red pepper to a boil in a large pot and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and simmer 10-15 minutes.
