Currently, a\nsecond vaccine dose is recommended for the Pfizer vaccine at 21 days after the\nfirst dose, and for the Moderna vaccine at 28 days. We don\u2019t have exact data on\nthese new vaccines, but based on experience with other vaccines, the second\ndoses are expected to increase your immunity even if they are given up to years\nafter the first immunizations (“booster shots”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you are\nfirst exposed to a virus, your immune system has to learn to respond to a new\nvirus and you get only a small increase in cells and cytokine chemicals to\nbattle the infection. The next time that you are exposed to that virus, you get\na much higher immune response, whether it is three weeks, six weeks, or even\nmore than a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The current\nrecommendations of 21 and 28 days are based on the data gathered during the\ntrials of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The CDC now recommends, “if it\nis not feasible to adhere to the recommended interval, the second dose of\nPfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines may be scheduled for\nadministration up to six weeks (42 days) after the first dose.” You would\nprobably still get a booster immune response even with a second dose given a\nlong time after six weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walgreens\nPharmacy currently plans to give immunizations at its stores throughout the\ncountry and says that, “patients can receive the second dose as long as it\nfollows the immunization window.” That means that the second dose will be\ngiven at or after the scheduled time frame of 21 or 28 days, so the current\nrecommendation is to try to get your second dose on schedule, but if that is\nnot possible, you will still get a booster immune response whenever you receive\nyour second dose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
