The blood-pressure-raising medicines taken most frequently were antidepressants, NSAIDs, steroids, and estrogens.<\/p>\n<p>Realize that some prescription drugs are necessary for your well-being, so you should never stop any drug until you have discussed it with your doctor. Here is a partial list of some medications that may raise blood pressure:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prescription Drugs<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 migraine medicines<br \/>\n\u2022 antidepressants<br \/>\n\u2022 stimulants<br \/>\n\u2022 weight loss drugs<br \/>\n\u2022 birth control hormones<br \/>\n\u2022 estrogen<br \/>\n\u2022 testosterone<br \/>\n\u2022 corticosteroids<br \/>\n\u2022 mineralocorticoids (to control electrolytes)<br \/>\n\u2022 some antibiotics<br \/>\n\u2022 some diabetic medications such as Glyburide or sulfonureas<br \/>\n\u2022 medications to treat extreme sleepiness such as modafinil<br \/>\n\u2022 thyroid hormone, when overdosed<br \/>\n\u2022 biological drugs used to treat certain cancers and immune diseases such as psoriasis or arthritis<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over-the-Counter Drugs and Supplements<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 aspirin<br \/>\n\u2022 nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve and others<br \/>\n\u2022 some cold medicines, cough medicines, decongestants and asthma medicines<br \/>\n\u2022 some herbal extracts such as ephedra, arnica, ginseng, guarana, licorice<br \/>\n\u2022 yohimbine and yohimbe extract (veterinary stimulants)<br \/>\n\u2022 some antacids and stomach medicines contain salt, which can raise blood pressure in some people<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other &#8220;Medicinal&#8221; Substances<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 alcohol<br \/>\n\u2022 anabolic steroids and exercise-performance-enhancing drugs<br \/>\n\u2022 cocaine<br \/>\n\u2022 amphetamines and methamphetamine<br \/>\n\u2022 ecstasy (MDMA and derivatives)<br \/>\n\u2022 nicotine<br \/>\n\u2022 caffeine<\/p>\n<p><strong>My Recommendations<\/strong><br \/>\nCheck with your doctor and go over the drugs and supplements you are taking that may be raising your blood pressure, to see which ones are essential for you and which ones can be changed or eliminated. You should not stop taking any prescription drug unless you have discussed it in detail with your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>High blood pressure is associated with increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, and premature death. I think that you should have an inexpensive upper arm blood pressure cuff and <a href=\"https:\/\/drmirkin.com\/health\/heart\/check-your-own-blood-pressure.html\">check your own blood pressure<\/a> frequently. If your blood pressure repeatedly is greater than 120\/80 just before you go to sleep at night, or over 130\/90 at other times, you suffer from high blood pressure.
